Learn how attackers combine environment variable staging and steganography in PNG files to deliver DCRat malware in memory.
Analysis Summary
# Tool/Technique: Environment Variable Staging & Steganographic Delivery
## Overview
This technique involves a multi-stage infection chain that leverages environment variables to stage malicious code and steganography to hide encrypted payloads within legitimate-looking image files (PNGs). The primary purpose is to bypass traditional file-based detection by executing the final payload—typically **DCRat**—entirely in memory using reflective loading and Living-off-the-Land Binaries (LOLBins).
## Technical Details
- **Type:** Malware Delivery Chain / Evasion Technique
- **Platform:** Windows
- **Capabilities:** Steganography, fileless execution, AMSI bypass, process injection, credential theft, and remote access.

## Functionality
### Core Capabilities
- **Environment Variable Staging:** Uses `INTERNAL_DB_CACHE` (or similar) to store hex-encoded PowerShell scripts, reducing the footprint of the command line.
- **Steganographic Extraction:** Appends malicious data to the end of PNG files. The loader extracts this data after the "IEND" marker.
- **Fileless Execution:** The final RAT payload is reconstructured and reflectively loaded into memory without being written to disk as an executable.
- **LOLBin Utilization:** Uses `MSBuild.exe` to execute the final malicious code, masquerading as a legitimate .NET build process.
### Advanced Features
- **Self-Cleaning:** The PowerShell command automatically clears the environment variable (`$null`) immediately after execution to hinder forensic analysis.
- **Layered Obfuscation:** Uses multiple layers of VBS and PowerShell obfuscation, including character replacement and custom decoding functions.
- **Memory Injection:** Specifically targets legitimate .NET Framework processes for injection to evade behavioral monitoring.

- `MSBuild.exe` making unexpected outbound network connections.
## Associated Threat Actors
- While the specific campaign targets weren't named, **DCRat** is a commodity malware widely used by various financially motivated cybercriminals and low-level threat actors.
## Detection Methods
- **Behavioral Detection:** Monitor for PowerShell processes referencing environment variables in the command line or using `IEX` (Invoke-Expression) on non-standard variables.
- **Memory Scanning:** Use tools to scan for reflective DLLs and known DCRat memory signatures.
- **Registry Monitoring:** Alert on the creation of unusually large environment variables in the `HKCU\Environment` hive.
- **Network Inspection:** Identify anomalies where image files (PNG) result in subsequent C2-like traffic from unrelated processes.
## Mitigation Strategies
- **Script Blocking:** Disable or restrict VBScript and PowerShell for standard users via Group Policy.
- **Execution Policy:** Set PowerShell Execution Policy to `AllSigned` or `Restricted`.
- **Process Hardening:** Use Attack Surface Reduction (ASR) rules to block process creations originating from VBScript or Office applications.
- **Endpoint Protection:** Deploy EDR/AV solutions capable of AMSI inspection and memory behavior analysis.
## Related Tools/Techniques
- **DCRat:** The final payload (a low-cost, modular remote access trojan).
- **Reflective Loading:** Technique used to load a library from memory.
- **AppLocker Bypass:** Using MSBuild to run unapproved code.
