Full Report
The Industrial Edge App Publisher contains a vulnerability chain involving improper certificate validation and the rendering of unescaped data from backend responses. These issues can be combined to allow an attacker on the network to impersonate the management server and execute arbitrary code (RCE) on the local machine through Node.js integration. Siemens has released an update for the Industrial Edge App Publisher and recommends to update to the latest version.
Analysis Summary
# Vulnerability: RCE Vulnerability Chain in Siemens Industrial Edge App Publisher
## CVE Details
- **CVE ID:** CVE-2026-78556, CVE-2026-78557
- **CVSS Score:** 8.3 (High) - CVSS v3.1 Base Score
- **CWE:**
- CWE-295: Improper Certificate Validation
- CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')
## Affected Systems
- **Products:** Industrial Edge App Publisher
- **Versions:** All versions prior to V1.27.9
- **Configurations:** Systems where the App Publisher communicates with a backend management server over a network.
## Vulnerability Description
The Industrial Edge App Publisher is susceptible to a high-impact vulnerability chain:
1. **Improper Certificate Validation (CVE-2026-78556):** The application fails to properly validate TLS certificates. This allows a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacker to intercept communications and spoof the management server.
2. **Unescaped Data Rendering (CVE-2026-78557):** The UI fails to sanitize or escape data received from the backend. Because the application's frontend is integrated with Node.js, an attacker who successfully spoofs the backend (via the first flaw) can inject malicious JavaScript. This leads to Remote Code Execution (RCE) on the local machine where the App Publisher is running.
## Exploitation
- **Status:** Not currently reported as exploited in the wild; PoC status not explicitly confirmed by vendor, though technical details are provided.
- **Complexity:** Medium (Requires the ability to intercept/relay network traffic).
- **Attack Vector:** Network
## Impact
- **Confidentiality:** High (Attacker can access data and execute code).
- **Integrity:** High (Attacker can modify application behavior and local system files).
- **Availability:** High (Attacker can crash the system or disrupt service).
## Remediation
### Patches
- **Update to V1.27.9 or later:** Siemens has released a patch addressing both vulnerabilities.

### Workarounds
- Protect network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms to prevent MitM positioning.
- Configure the environment according to Siemens' operational guidelines for Industrial Security.
## Detection
- **Indicators of Compromise:** Unusual outbound network traffic from the App Publisher; unexpected Node.js child processes; presence of unauthorized JavaScript in UI logs.
- **Detection methods and tools:** Network monitoring for invalid or self-signed certificates in the communication path between the App Publisher and the management server.
