Full Report
The affected application loads dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) from an uncontrolled search path. This could allow an authenticated local attacker to place a specially crafted DLL in a directory that the application searches, leading to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the affected application. Siemens is preparing fixes and recommends mitigations for products where fixes are not yet available. Currently the fix is expected in the week commencing 19th of October, 2026.
Analysis Summary
# Vulnerability: DLL Sideloading in Siemens Software Center
## CVE Details
- **CVE ID:** CVE-2026-110936
- **CVSS Score:** 6.7 (Medium) via CVSS v3.1 / 8.4 (High) via CVSS v4.0
- **CWE:** CWE-427: Uncontrolled Search Path Element
## Affected Systems
- **Products:** Siemens Software Center
- **Versions:** All versions currently available (as of October 15, 2026)
- **Configurations:** Systems where an authenticated local attacker has write access to directories included in the application's DLL search path.
## Vulnerability Description
The Siemens Software Center application utilizes an uncontrolled search path when loading Dynamic-Link Libraries (DLLs). Because the application does not sufficiently validate the path from which it loads these dependencies, it is susceptible to "DLL Sideloading." An attacker can place a malicious DLL file in a directory searched by the application (such as the application directory or other folders prioritized by the Windows DLL search order). When the application initiates, it loads the malicious library instead of the legitimate one.
## Exploitation
- **Status:** Not reported as exploited in the wild; PoC status not explicitly confirmed, though the flaw was discovered by external researchers (Huntress Labs).
- **Complexity:** Low (Requires the ability to place a file in a specific directory).
- **Attack Vector:** Local (Attacker must have local access and be authenticated).
## Impact
- **Confidentiality:** High (Full access to data accessible by the application).
- **Integrity:** High (Ability to modify application data and system files).
- **Availability:** High (Potential for system crashes or service disruption).
- **Note:** Execution occurs with the privileges of the affected application, which may lead to privilege escalation if the application runs as a high-privilege user.
## Remediation
### Patches
- **No patch is currently available.**
- Siemens has announced that fixes are expected to be released in the week commencing **October 19, 2026**.
### Workarounds
- **General Security Recommendations:**
- Ensure the principle of least privilege is applied to local user accounts to prevent unauthorized file placement in application directories.
- Protect network access to devices with appropriate security mechanisms.
- Follow Siemens’ operational guidelines for Industrial Security: hxxps://www[.]siemens[.]com/cert/operational-guidelines-industrial-security.
## Detection
- **Indicators of Compromise:** Presence of unexpected or unsigned DLL files in the Siemens Software Center installation directory or temporary folders.
- **Detection Methods:** Monitor for unusual child processes spawning from the Siemens Software Center executable. Use File Integrity Monitoring (FIM) to alert on new files created in protected application directories.
