Full Report
The products listed below contain an out-of-bounds read vulnerability that could allow an attacker to cause abnormal product behavior, instability, or denial of service. Siemens has released a new version for Capital Embedded AR Classic R20-11 and recommends updating to the latest version. Siemens is preparing further fix versions and recommends specific countermeasures for products where fixes are not, or not yet available.
Analysis Summary
# Vulnerability: Out-of-bounds Read in Siemens Capital Embedded AR Classic
## CVE Details
- **CVE ID:** CVE-2026-89208
- **CVSS Score:**
- CVSS v4.0: **6.9 (Medium)**
- CVSS v3.1: **5.3 (Medium)**
- **CWE:** CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read)
## Affected Systems
- **Products:** Capital Embedded AR Classic (formerly Capital VSTAR), which utilizes the Nucleus NET networking module.
- **Versions:**
- **Capital Embedded AR Classic R20-11:** All versions prior to V2303.
- **Capital Embedded AR Classic 431-422:** All versions.
- **Configurations:** Systems utilizing the integrated Nucleus NET networking module for packet processing.
## Vulnerability Description
The vulnerability exists because the software fails to properly validate input bounds before accessing packet data within the Nucleus NET module. An unauthenticated remote attacker can send specially crafted packets that force the system to read memory beyond the intended buffer boundaries. In the context of the AUTOSAR Classic platform, this typically results in abnormal product behavior, system instability, or a Denial of Service (DoS) condition.
## Exploitation
- **Status:** Not exploited (Reported via coordinated disclosure by Forescout Technologies).
- **Complexity:** Low
- **Attack Vector:** Network (Remote)
## Impact
- **Confidentiality:** Low (Potential to read unintended memory segments).
- **Integrity:** None
- **Availability:** Low to Medium (Abnormal behavior, instability, or Denial of Service).
## Remediation
### Patches
- **Capital Embedded AR Classic R20-11:** Update to **V2303** or later.
- **Capital Embedded AR Classic 431-422:** Currently, no fix is planned for this specific branch.
### Workarounds
- **Network Segmentation:** Isolate Electronic Control Units (ECUs) behind properly configured gateways or firewalls.
- **Access Control:** Restrict network access to the devices to authorized traffic only.
- **Operational Guidelines:** Adhere to Siemens' operational guidelines for Industrial Security and product-specific manuals.
## Detection
- **Indicators of Compromise:** Unusual network traffic patterns targeting the Nucleus NET stack, or unexplained ECU reboots/instability.
- **Detection Methods:** Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to identify malformed packets that violate standard protocol bounds; monitoring system logs for memory access violations if supported by the hardware/OS abstraction.
