GitLab warned users today to immediately patch a maximum-severity vulnerability in the CI/CD Regular Expression Compiler that could let remote attackers run arbitrary code on targeted instances. [...]
Analysis Summary
# Vulnerability: Critical Remote Code Execution in GitLab CI/CD Regex Compiler
## CVE Details
- **CVE ID:** CVE-2026-97229
- **CVSS Score:** 10.0 (Critical)
- **CWE:** CWE-190 (Integer Overflow)
## Affected Systems
- **Products:** GitLab Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE)
- **Versions:**
- 19.2 prior to 19.2.8
- 19.3 prior to 19.3.4
- 19.4 prior to 19.4.2
- **Configurations:** Self-managed GitLab installations. (Note: GitLab.com and GitLab Dedicated are already patched).
## Vulnerability Description
The flaw exists within GitLab's CI/CD Regular Expression Compiler, the engine responsible for parsing and evaluating regex patterns within project pipeline configuration files (`.gitlab-ci.yml`). An integer overflow occurs due to insufficient validation of user-supplied regular expressions. Under specific conditions, an unauthenticated attacker can exploit this overflow to bypass security boundaries and execute arbitrary code on the underlying GitLab server.
## Exploitation
- **Status:** Not currently reported as exploited in the wild (as of Oct 2026); however, GitLab recommends immediate patching due to high risk.
- **Complexity:** Low to Medium (Requires crafting a specific regex in a CI/CD configuration).
- **Attack Vector:** Network (Remote)
## Impact
- **Confidentiality:** Total (Full access to server data and repositories)
- **Integrity:** Total (Ability to modify code, pipelines, and server configurations)
- **Availability:** Total (Potential for full system takeover or service disruption)
## Remediation
### Patches
GitLab has released the following versions to address the vulnerability:
- **19.4.2**
- **19.3.4**
- **19.2.8**
### Workarounds
There are no documented official workarounds that preserve full CI/CD functionality. Immediate upgrade to a patched version is the only recommended mitigation.
## Detection
- **Indicators of Compromise:** Monitor for unusual or excessively long/complex regular expression patterns within `.gitlab-ci.yml` files in newly created or updated projects.
- **Detection methods and tools:** Audit GitLab application logs for unexpected crashes in the CI/CD compiler service or unauthorized execution of system commands by the `git` user.
