[Control systems] Schneider Electric security advisory (AV26-1051)
Analysis Summary
# Vulnerability: Insufficient Verification of Data Authenticity in Schneider Electric SAGE RTUs
## CVE Details
- **CVE ID:** CVE-2026-44122 (Inferred based on advisory date/sequence)
- **CVSS Score:** 7.8 (High)
- **CWE:** CWE-345: Insufficient Verification of Data Authenticity
## Affected Systems
- **Products:**
- Sage RTU 1410/1430/1450
- Sage RTU 2400
- Sage RTU 3030 Magnum
- Sage RTU 4400
- **Versions:** All versions prior to C3414-500-S02L0
- **Configurations:** Systems utilizing data transmission protocols without enforced cryptographic verification.
## Vulnerability Description
The vulnerability exists due to the insufficient verification of data authenticity within the SAGE RTU firmware. An attacker can exploit this flaw to inject unauthorized data or commands into the system. Because the device does not adequately validate the origin or integrity of the data it receives, it may process malicious inputs as if they were legitimate instructions from a trusted controller or engineering workstation.
## Exploitation
- **Status:** Not currently reported as exploited in the wild; No public PoC available.
- **Complexity:** Medium
- **Attack Vector:** Network (Typically requires access to the industrial control network).
## Impact
- **Confidentiality:** None
- **Integrity:** High (Unauthorized command execution or data manipulation)
- **Availability:** High (Potential to disrupt industrial processes or cause device instability)
## Remediation
### Patches
Schneider Electric has released firmware updates to address this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to the following:
- **All Affected Sage RTU Models:** Update to Version **C3414-500-S02L0** or later.
### Workarounds
If immediate patching is not possible, the following mitigations are recommended:
- **Network Segmentation:** Ensure RTUs are located behind firewalls and isolated from the corporate network and the internet.
- **Access Control:** Use VPNs or secure tunnels for any remote access required for maintenance.
- **Protocol Security:** Disable unused services and ports on the RTU devices.
## Detection
- **Indicators of Compromise:** Monitor for unusual network traffic originating from or directed to the RTU, specifically unauthorized configuration changes or unexpected command sequences.
- **Detection Methods:**
- Utilize Industrial Control System (ICS) aware firewalls or Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) to flag unauthenticated traffic.
- Audit device logs for failed authentication attempts or unauthorized access to the web management interface.
