Analysis Summary
# Vulnerability: Critical Authentication Bypass in JFrog Artifactory
## CVE Details
- **CVE ID:** CVE-2026-82329
- **CVSS Score:** 9.8 (Critical)
- **CWE:** Authentication Bypass (Weakness in credential issuance/validation)
## Affected Systems
- **Products:** JFrog Artifactory (Self-managed instances)
- **Versions:**
- 7.161.0 to 7.161.19
- 7.146.0 to 7.146.36
- 7.133.0 to 7.133.28
- 7.125.0 to 7.125.19
- 7.117.0 to 7.117.27
- 7.111.4 to 7.111.21
- **Configurations:** Default configurations where an additional "join key" has not been manually configured.
## Vulnerability Description
The flaw exists within **JFrog Access**, the component responsible for issuing and validating credentials. In default configurations lacking a custom join key, the system utilizes a "phantom" join key. An unauthenticated attacker with network access can abuse this predictable or static element to forge administrative access tokens and mint new administrator-level credentials.
## Exploitation
- **Status:** Exploited in the wild (as of September 1, 2026).
- **Complexity:** Low (Requires no authentication and no user interaction).
- **Attack Vector:** Network (Remote).
## Impact
- **Confidentiality:** Total (Administrative access allows enumeration of users, groups, and credentials).
- **Integrity:** Total (Potential for supply chain poisoning by tampering with build pipelines and binaries).
- **Availability:** Total (Administrative control allows for system-wide disruption).
## Remediation
### Patches
JFrog released a fix on August 28, 2026. Organizations should upgrade to the following version or higher:
- **Artifactory version 7.161.20**
### Workarounds
The primary remediation is patching. However, the report indicates the vulnerability relies on the absence of a custom join key; ensuring a secure, non-default **join key** is configured is a critical architectural requirement.
## Detection
- **Indicators of Compromise:** Look for unauthorized minting of administrative tokens or unexpected enumeration of users, groups, and federated access topologies in audit logs.
- **Detection methods:**
- Inspect JFrog Artifactory audit logs for unusual credential generation.
- Review connected systems for malicious changes or unauthorized backdoors.
- Monitor for unexpected network traffic directed at internet-exposed Artifactory instances.
